Now with the power of the Nine-tailed fox rushing through him, Naruto rushes Haku. Haku tries attacking with his needles but they have no effect on him. Haku attacks once more but Naruto easily dodges. Naruto begins shattering Haku’s mirrors and then grabs Haku when he appears for an attack.

Outside, Kakashi realizes that the seal has only been loosened on Naruto and that the Nine-tailed fox’s chakra is leaking through. Kakashi whips out a scroll and swipes some of his blood on it. Kakashi tells Zabuza it is time for their battle to end.

Inside the Crystal Ice Mirror jutsu, Haku realizes it is over for him. Naruto punches Haku, knocking him out of the mirrors. The mirrors shatter and Naruto charges Haku. Haku says that he has failed Zabuza and his mask begins to fall off. Naruto stops his fist just inches away from Haku’s face and returns to normal realizing he had met Haku before in the forest. Haku asks him why he doesn’t strike because he vowed to avenge Sasuke. Naruto knocks Haku to the ground. Haku tells Naruto that won’t be enough and wonders if Sasuke really meant anything to Naruto.

“To show mercy to those who oppose the one you serve, to allow his enemies to live when you could strike them down. This is not compassion. It is a betrayal of your life’s very purpose. For what reason do you exist then? You’re of use to no one. Your life has no meaning. It is mere existence, day after day of pain and struggle, signifying nothing.”-Haku

Naruto asks Haku why he would devote himself to someone like Zabuza. He then says if Zabuza is the one person who matters to Haku then that is the sorriest thing he has ever heard. Haku tells Naruto there were once people who use to matter to him, his mother and father. He explains that he was born in the snowy mountains of the land of waves. His parents were poor farmers and they were a happy family. Everything changed when his father killed his mother and almost him. Haku tells Naruto that after years of civil war his people hated and feared anyone who had his kekkei genkai trait. People with this trait were used as mercenaries during the war. After the war, these people were despised and feared because the people thought they would bring more war. The clans went into hiding so they wouldn’t die. Haku’s mother was able to hide the trait and married Haku’s father. However, one day Haku discovered the trait and his father witnessed him using it. Haku’s father came with some men and killed Haku’s mother. He tried to kill Haku but Haku’s ability saved him-killing his father and the other men. Haku tells Naruto that after the incident he had lost his purpose and that he was no longer necessary. Naruto realizes Haku is just like him. Haku continues telling Naruto about his past. He became a street urchin and one day was sitting on a bridge when Zabuza discovered him. Zabuza asks if Haku would like to come with him and dedicate his entire life to him. Zabuza then leaves his home with Haku, telling Haku that one day he will return and rule it and that Haku will help him do it with his special abilities. Haku tells Zabuza he understands and that he is nothing but a weapon for Zabuza to use. Haku tells himself that he has failed Zabuza and approaches Naruto. He tells Naruto to kill him.

Kakashi performs a Summoning known as the Fanged Pursuit jutsu. Zabuza asks what the point of that is if he can’t even find him. A pack of dogs appear below Zabuza and hold him down. Kakashi tells Zabuza that if he couldn’t see him then he knew would have to smell him out through his dogs. He goes on to say that he allowed Zabuza to hurt him earlier so that he could get his own blood on Zabuza’s blade so that the dogs could smell him out. Kakashi tells Zabuza he has always pushed things too far and reveals Zabuza’s history. Zabuza failed on an assassination attempt on the Mizukage and on a coup d’etat, forcing him to flee the land of waves with what followers he had. Zabuza became a rogue ninja and began working for Gato so that he could get enough money to try taking over his home once more. Kakashi tells Zabuza he will defeat him with his own jutsu instead of copies. Kakashi uses the Lightning Blade jutsu to gather his chakra in his hand. He tells Zabuza he won’t allow him to kill a noble man like the bridge builder who is trying to help the people of his lands.
