Sasuke, Sakura, and Naruto make their way to room 301 where they see Kakashi waiting outside. Kakashi tells Sakura that he is glad she came because now they can all register. Sakura asks why and Kakashi explains that only all three as a group can take the exam and that he didn’t want to reveal that so no one was pressured into taking the exam or because they had feelings for someone. Naruto and co. enter the room, leaving Kakashi outside.

When they enter the room they see hundreds of ninja from the different villages. Sasuke is greeted by a genin named Ino who also has a crush on him like Sakura does. Sakura tells Ino to get away from Sasuke and the two start insulting each other. Ino’s teammates, Shikamaru and Chouji, show up. Naruto explains to the viewers who each genin is. (Shikamaru is lazy, Chouji is fat and loves to eat, Ino is annoying.) Three more genin appeared named, Hinata, Kiba, and Shino. (Hinata is shy and has a crush on Naruto but Naruto doesn’t know it. Kiba loves dogs and is annoying. Shino is quiet and is also annoying according to Naruto). Kiba tells Sasuke’s group that his group will blow them away. Hinata tells Naruto that he shouldn’t pay him any attention. Chouji notices Kiba’s dog looks yummy. An older genin appears named Kabuto. Kabuto tells the nine genin not to make a spectacle of themselves around the others. He goes on to explain that the exam makes everyone really tense. Sakura asks how many times Kabuto has taken the exam and Kabuto says he has taken is nine times. The nine genin realize how hard the exam is. Kabuto says he may be able to help them and pulls out a deck of cards with recorded data on all the genin. The cards are blank until Kabuto performs a special jutsu on it. He pulls a card and makes a map appear with each village’s number of ninja that come to take the exam. Kabuto explains that everyone comes to take the exam together to foster friendship between the villages and to regulate the number of shinobi in each village to maintain the balance of power. Sasuke asks if the cards if any information on specific genin taking these exams. Kabuto asks for a description. Sasuke tells Kabuto their names are Gaara and Rock Lee. Kabuto pulls both cards and we see the two’s stats. Naruto thinks to himself that he has no idea what is going on but he will act like it. Lee’s card says that he is one year old than Sasuke, has finished 14 c rank missions and 20 d, is very strong in taijutsu but other skills suck, his sensei is Gai, teammates are Tenten and Neji, and for some reason didn’t take the chunin exams last year. Kabuto shows Gaara’s card which says that he has completed 1 b rank missions, 8 c ranks, and an unknown amount of d ranks. Kabuto says there isn’t much other information except for the fact that Gaara has never even been scratched during his missions. Kabuto pulls another card to show how many ninja each village sent again. He takes note of how the sound village just sprang up and everything about them is unknown.

Outside, Kakashi thinks of how Iruka was telling him his students weren’t ready. We see Gai interrupt Iruka and tell Kakashi that he is putting a lot of pressure on the kids and that he (Gai) held his kids back so they could enjoy their youth and get stronger. Kakashi tells Gai that he thinks Gai is just afraid that Naruto and co. will beat his team. The third Hokage stops the fighting. Kakashi wonders how Naruto and co. are doing inside.

Sakura thinks about how they’re rookies and everyone else is older and much experienced. She notices Naruto “falling apart” in front of her. She decides to try and cheer him up but Naruto points at all the genin and tells them he is Naruto and he will beat every one of them.

Outside Kakashi laughs as he hears Naruto.

Ino tells Sakura to keep her “boyfriend’s” trap shut because she is afraid the other ninja will attack them. Naruto says he feels much better now. The other genin take notice of Naruto. The three sound ninja discuss what Kabuto said about their village. The leader says it is time to give Kabuto some more information for his cards. Kiba and Shikamaru tell Naruto off for what he said. Sakura starts shaking Naruto for what he said and then apologizes to all the ninja in the room. The three sound ninja race towards Kabuto who takes notice. Sakura continues chewing out Naruto. One of the sound ninja throws some kunai at Kabuto but he is able to dodge. The leader of the sound ninja starts punching Kabuto but he dodges the punches. Kabuto’s glasses break and he feels fine but then a few seconds later he falls to the ground. Naruto and Sakura run to his side. The sound village tells Kabuto that they will be chunin by the end of the exam. Neji asks his teammate Lee what was up with the sound village’s attack but Lee isn’t quite sure. The exam proctor appears and introduces himself as Ibiki.
