Ibiki, the proctor, has appeared in room 301. He orders the ninja from the sound village to stop fighting or they’ll be failed. Ibiki tells all the ninja not to fight or they’ll be disqualified. He begins to explain the first part of the chunin exams will be a written test and a number will be handed out to each ninja to determine where they will sit.

Inside the testing room, Naruto starts to freak out because he hates written exams and doesn’t know where Sasuke and Sakura are. Sitting next to Naruto is Hinata, who wishes him luck. Ibiki begins to explain the exam. The test is based on a point reduction system and you begin with a score of 10. Teams will pass or fail based on the total score of the team members. (This angers Sakura) Sentinels are positioned around the room to prevent cheating and if they catch anyone cheating then you lose 2 points. If you’re caught cheating 5 times then you fail. If one person on a team fails with a 0 then the entire team fails. Naruto freaks out even more upon hearing this because he knows Sasuke and Sakura will kill him. The 10th question will only be given out in the last 15 minutes of the test. The test is one hour long. Sakura and Sasuke watch Naruto closely thinking that he’ll choke. Naruto gains some confidence by thinking that he just has to take his time. He looks at the first question and realizes he can’t do so he moves on. Sakura realizes that only a handful of people will be able to do answer these questions. Naruto continues to skip to the next question. Sasuke is also having a hard time understanding these problems. Hinata takes notice of Naruto breaking down. Sakura thinks to herself that she needs a high score to help the team so she considers cheating for a moment but then she stops and hopes Sasuke and Naruto don’t cheat. Naruto decides that he’ll have to cheat and not get caught but then he sees Ibiki and decides not to. Sasuke notices that Ibiki and the Sentinels made a bigger fuss about cheating than the test. He then realizes that they allow you to cheat 5 times because they want you to cheat to get the answers (testing a ninja’s ability to gather intelligence and to see through deception). Sasuke then wonders how many others have realized this and then hopes that Naruto figures it out. Naruto continues to freak out. Sasuke begins to wonder who has all the answers.

Around the room we see different ninja from the various villages begin cheating. Kiba uses his dog to spot the answers. The sound village ninja uses sound to listen to the movement of people’s pencils. Shino uses his bugs to get the answers. Tenten uses a mirror with Lee.

Naruto gets annoyed by the sound of the ticking clock and then decides that he may have to cheat. Hinata interrupts his thoughts and offers to show him her test. Naruto wonders why Hinata would want to show him her test and then considers the possibility that Hinata was forced by her teammates to trick him. Naruto asks Hinata why she would help him cheat and she tells him she doesn’t want him to leave (she’s red faced the entire time cause she has a crush, how sweet.) Naruto decides to trust her. Hinata slides her paper out and Naruto begins to cheat but then a sentinel throws a kunai at a guy sitting behind Naruto. The guy and his teammates and others are kicked out by the sentinels for cheating 5 times. Hinata urges Naruto to cheat but then Naruto sees a sentinel writing him down so he tells Hinata no and explains that he is an ace ninja and doesn’t need to cheat. Hinata notices his paper is blank and asks if he is sure. Naruto says he doesn’t want to cheat and he also doesn’t want to get Hinata in trouble. Hinata is pleased to hear that Naruto cares. Naruto turns his head away and questions why he has to be so noble.

Around the room people continue cheating. Neji uses his baykugon and Sasuke uses his sharingan. Ino notices Sakura is answering the questions all on her own so she uses a mind transfer jutsu to take over Sakura and steal her answers. Ino successfully takes over Sakura and memorizes the answers so that she can pass them to Chouji and Shikamaru. People continue to get kicked out.

Ibiki takes special notice of how calm and collected Gaara is. Gaara uses his sand to create an eyeball that he sends around the room to steal answers. Kankuro requests to use the bathroom. He is handcuffed by a sentinel and taken to the bathroom. In the bathroom, Kankuro tells the sentinel that the other sentinels haven’t noticed there is one more sentinel than there used to be. It is then revealed that the sentinel with Kankuro is really his puppet.
