Outside the Forest of Death, Sakura says this place creeps her out. Anko says they call it the Forest of Death and soon enough they’ll discover why. Naruto mocks her. Anko throws a kunai at him and then appears behind him. A grass ninja appears behind Anko which puts her on the defensive. The ninja claims he is returning her kunai. The ninja walks away and Naruto wonders if he could make tongue slither like the grass ninja did. Anko pulls out some forms and tells all the ninja they need to read and sign a consent form because some of them may not come back. Anko begins passing the forms out and then explains the test. It will be testing their survival skills and they will receive a map. The 44th Battle Training Field (or Forest of Death) has 44 locked entrance gates and there is a river and of course the forest inside. In the center is a locked tower located 10km from each gate. The teams must capture two scrolls, a heaven and an earth scroll, and anything goes. Half of the ninja will be given a heaven scroll and the other half a earth. Each team must get whichever scroll their missing from another team and deliver it to the tower in the center of the forest. They have five days to complete the test and must live off the terrain and stay alive against the man eating beasts. Half of the teams will be eliminated and no one will be allowed to quit during the middle of the exam. If you lose a member, don’t get both scrolls in 5 days, or read the scrolls, then you fail. Anko explains that not reading the scroll is to test a ninja’s integrity because there are times when you must deliver secret documents. Anko then tells the ninja to exchange their consent forms for scrolls and to pick a gate to begin at. She then tells them not to die.

Sasuke notices they are taking precautions to make sure no one knows who gets what scroll so that reconnaissance is required.

Sakura runs into Ino and her team. Ino tells Sakura that she is surprised Sakura is still in the exam and makes fun of her forehead. Sakura returns some insults and then the two just start arguing. Shikamaru and Chouji say they’re glad they didn’t turn on them.

Naruto sees Hinata and asks her why she is out there. Hinata doesn’t say much and Naruto thinks to himself that Hinata is weird. Hinata tries to offer Naruto some medicine for his cut that he received from Anko’s kunai but Naruto says bye to her and keeps walking.

They begin handing out scrolls and Naruto’s team receives the heaven scroll. Anko tells everyone to go to the gates with their scrolls so that the test can begin. At all the gates we see the teams preparing in their own ways. Shikamaru says he wants to go after Naruto, Chouji is double checking his food supply, the sound ninjas are ready for their “plan, Lee wants to make Gai proud, the grass ninjas want to target the rookies.

Anko opens the gates and all the ninja run in. The leader grass ninja tells his teammates to look for the “three brats”.

Kiba tells Hinata and Shino they need to find the scroll so Hinata uses her byakugon and the other teams begin searching for scrolls.

Chouji sits down and begins eating potato chips. Shikamaru and Ino try to get him to get moving but he continues eating. Shikamaru senses some ninja coming so they pull Chouji into the bushes. Three ninja appear and Shikamaru notices some potato chips were left behind. The ninja don’t notice and leave.

Kiba tells Hinata and Shino that he thinks they should lay a trap near the tower and capture the scrolls there. Akamaru senses three ninja watching them and tells Kiba. Leeches fall on the ninja watching Kiba’s team. During the commotion, the three ninja fall into Kiba’s net trap.

Naruto and co. hear the scream and Sakura gets frightened. Naruto tries to pee in front of Sakura but she bashes him. Naruto goes off to pee and then comes back saying he wrote his whole name.  Sasuke attacks Naruto and sends him into a tree. Sakura and Naruto wonder why he did that. Sasuke attacks once more. Naruto fights back and the two duel with their kunais. Sakura asks Sasuke what he is doing. Sasuke tells her to look at Naruto. Sasuke then asks “Naruto” what he did with Naruto and then points out that this Naruto doesn’t have a cut from Anko’s kunai and is also wearing his shuriken holster on the wrong leg. The “Naruto” changes back into a different ninja who says he wants their scroll. Sasuke and Sakura raise their kunai. The ninja charges them.
