Shippuuden begins by showing us a scene that will happen later in the series. It is hard to understand if you haven't read the manga so I added a few things to make it make sense.

Naruto, Sakura, and Yamato (Yamato is their leader) are searching Orochimaru’s base for Sasuke. They search each room frantically but are unable to find Sasuke. They hear a large explosion outside and we see their other teammate named Sai looking up at Sasuke. Sakura runs outside thinking that Sai has betrayed them again (he was sent to kill Sasuke but Naruto changed him and he now wants to help reunite Sasuke and Naruto). Sasuke tells Sakura that he was woken up because of “bonds” (referring to Sai telling Sasuke that he was there to reunite him and Naruto). Sakura realizes that Sai hasn’t betrayed them and is shocked to see Sasuke. Naruto and Yamato appear and we see flashbacks of Naruto and Sasuke talking about bonds at the Valley of End. Naruto asks Sasuke why he didn’t kill him back then. Sasuke tells him the reason is simple and has a flashback of his brother telling him he can activate the Mangekyou sharingan like he did but he must kill his closest friend. Sasuke tells Naruto that he didn’t want to give his brother the pleasure of seeing him obtain power by following in his footsteps. Sasuke then tells Naruto that he spared his life on a whim. Sasuke appears next to Naruto. He tells Naruto if he plans to be Hokage that he should’ve been training instead of chasing him. Sasuke then pulls out his sword and tells Naruto he will lose his life. Naruto asks Sasuke if someone who can’t even save one of his closest friends can become Hokage. Sasuke slowly begins to jab his sword towards Naruto’s back…

Here begins the current events...

In the forest, three ninja are chasing a cat. The cat leads them into the leaf village and the three ninja crash into many objects and an old man (The Ramen Guy). The old man thinks one of the ninja is Naruto at first but once he turns around we see it is Konohamaru. The cat runs into an ally way. The two other ninjas (Moegi and Udon) tell Konohamaru they got the cat cornered. Konohamaru jumps down from a building and starts wrestling with the cat. He manages to grab hold of it and one of the ninjas tells their sensei (Ebisu) they caught the cat.

Back at the mission office, a fat lady is hugging her cat and pays for the ninja’s services. Konohamaru and his two teammates are criticized by their sensei, Ebisu, for taking too long on their mission. Konohamaru tells his sensei he can’t bring out his true power on such lame missions and asks Iruka for a harder mission. Ebisu says they just became genin and Hokage Tsunade adds for now they will just do d-rank missions. Konohamaru tells everyone one day he will be the seventh Hokage. Tsunade questions why the seventh and not the sixth. Konohamaru says Naruto will be the sixth.

Outside, Konohamaru walks alongside his teammates and the three wonder where Naruto is. Konohamaru tells them he believes Naruto will be much stronger when he returns.

From the mission office, Tsunade tells Shizune and Iruka she thinks Konohamaru is more like the second Naruto than the seventh hokage. Iruka thinks about Naruto and wonders if he is doing well. He then tells Shizune and Tsunade that is has been a while since he left with Jiraiya to train. Shizune says it’s about time for them to return. Tsunade says it’ll be a problem if they don’t because something big is about to happen.

At the gate to the village, Jiraiya and Naruto enter. Izumo and Kotetsu (who monitor the gate) are surprised to see them as they walk by.

Konohamaru and co. see Sakura and ask her what she is doing. Sakura says she is going to the main gate to pick up the trafficking report for Tsunade and asks if they want to come.

Naruto tells Jiraiya that it has been two and a half years since they have been back. On the other side of some buildings, Konohamaru and co. tell Sakura about their cat chasing mission. Sakura tells the three they had the same mission. Konohamaru asks Sakura if she heard anything from Naruto and she says no but that he should be returning soon.

Sakura and co. arrive at the gate and Izumo and Kotetsu immediately tell the four that “they’re back” and if they look around the village they’ll see something “interesting”. Sakura questions what he means and then wonders if they’re referring to Naruto and Jiraiya.

Naruto climbs a pole and looks over the village. He yells out that he has returned.

Naruto thinks to himself that everything is so nostalgic. Naruto notices Tsunade’s face has been added to the mountain. Sakura and co. appear to see Naruto. Sakura yells at Naruto and asks when he got back. Naruto says just now and jumps down. Naruto says it’s been a while and Sakura is surprised that Naruto is now taller than her. Sakura thinks to herself that Naruto has grown really strong since he has been gone. Sakura blushes and asks Naruto if he thinks she has become more womanly now. Naruto says she is fine and hasn’t changed at all. Sakura gets mad and Jiraiya thinks to himself that Naruto doesn’t understand a women’s heart at all. Konohamaru yells at Naruto and we see him use a sexy jutsu. Jiraiya freaks out and Sakura is shocked. Konohamaru asks how it was and Naruto says he’s not a kid anymore. He then says Konohamaru shouldn’t use techniques like that either. Sakura thinks to herself that Naruto hasn’t grown just physically but mentally and probably has some impressive techniques now. Naruto says Konohamaru’s technique is too weak and prepares to show everyone his new perverted jutsu. Sakura punches him which scares Konohamaru and co. Sakura yells at Naruto and says he hasn’t grown at all. Jiraiya thinks to himself that Sakura is just like a second Tsunade. Naruto thinks to himself that Sakura hasn’t changed at all.

At the Hokage’s office, Tsunade greets Jiraiya and Naruto. She asks if training had any results and Jiraiya asks if he she thought they would come with none. Naruto says he did great. Tsunade says she would like to see the results then. She goes on to say she wants him to fight a certain someone who has been resting up for the past few days. Tsunade begins to say who the opponent is and then we hear a knock at the door. The door begins to open…

We see the new Sakura and the younger Sakura comparing each other’s height. Older Sakura says she has become more like an adult and that Tsunade trained her in a lot of different ways. The younger Sakura asks her what she means. We see a bunch of scenes of Tsunade throwing, kicking, and hitting stuff at Sakura. Younger Sakura freaks out and older Sakura tells her to train hard. They reveal the next “keyword” which is a “small Tsu”.
